On Friday, January 24th, we had the pleasure of hosting a panel discussion with experts from academia, city government, and nonprofit organizations on “Digital Rights and AI in the Urban Landscape.” The conversation highlighted real-world examples, such as Long Beach’s digital rights platform and the controversial smart streetlights in San Diego, emphasizing the importance of transparency, community engagement, and ethical AI governance. Panelists shared insights on balancing technological advancements with privacy concerns, the role of public interest technology, and the need for inclusive, participatory approaches to AI deployment in cities. This session emphasized the critical need for thoughtful AI integration to enhance urban living while safeguarding digital rights.
