Graduate Researcher

Jiayu Sun, M.A., is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Communication Studies. She is a recipient of the Summer 2024 TIPI fellowship and the 2022-2025 P.E.O. International Scholarship for international female scholars. Her research interests center at examining how communities (e.g., offline neighborhood communities, online emergent communities) communicatively organize to make reliable decisions for emergency response. At TIPI, her work has resulted in multiple publications and conference presentations, including a first-author publication in Journal of Applied Communication that looks at how online/offline communication enabled a hybrid hyperlocal community of practice for disaster response.
She has co-authored book chapters discussing the social media and technology use in organizational contexts, and conceptualizations on community/institutional resilience in the context of emergency preparedness. Jiayu earned her Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Master’s degree in Communication Studies in Shanghai, China.
